This past week Home Builders’ held its annual Legislative Reception at Dover Downs Tuesday night. The Reception is a great way for legislators to hear from members about various topics relevant to our industry- but in an informal setting over nibbles and adult beverages.

This year about 60 HBADE members and Legislators attended and talked and socialized. We were joined by representatives of St George’s Vo-Tech High School talking about our partnership with them to help students build sheds see the video: http://nahbnow.com/2018/03/hba-of-delaware-helps-students-build-sheds-raise-money/#comment-826464

We were also joined by Jerry Howard, the CEO of the National Association of Home Builders. Jerry was in town that day to help us discuss with legislators the problems with Delaware residential electric licensing and how it has slowed the housing market, slowed hosing productin and impacted builders and home buyers. We distributed a series of talking points to legislators, a copy is here: Click here HBADE Talking Points

To help our members make sense of the recent federal tax changes, Brian Stratton and Mike Easton of the Horty CPA firm presented a seminar on March 13, 2018.

Although tax laws and discussion of such can be a dry subject, it seemed to keep everyone paying attention for 90 minutes, with lots of Q&A. Afterward one member even thanked us for the seminar, proclaiming “I believe it was very helpful to a lot of member companies”. Kudos and our thanks to Brian and Mike of the Horty Group for their presentation.

Remodelers Scholarship Gives Leaders an Extra Boost

You can view the Travel Channel for hours on end, but watching an expedition on TV will never even come close to experiencing the real thing.
Likewise, you can easily read about current events in the remodeling industry and best practices for running a council. But it’s much more effective to learn directly from industry pros with proven success.
The NAHB Remodelers Leadership Scholarship program helps to facilitate that higher level of interaction and industry knowledge for local remodelers council chairs and vice chairs. The scholarship will provide $1,500 to help offset travel expenses to attend NAHB Remodelers meetings and remodeling industry education events at the 2018 Midyear Board meeting in Portland, Ore., July 24-28.
“Participating in the program was an incredible experience,” said Elliot Pike, CGR, CAPS, a 2016 recipient of the scholarship. “I spent quality time working with remodeling industry leaders, participated in high-level discussions, and was able to actively learn about and contribute to the development of the remodeling and residential construction industry as a whole.”
Scholarship winners not only learn firsthand about the remodeling industry, they also discover tips and ideas for running a successful local council, and network with some of the most talented and accomplished remodelers in the country — many of whom were scholarship recipients themselves.
“I was instantly welcomed by the ‘family’ of remodelers and got to meet some extraordinary members, including past and current remodelers of the year,” said Kurt Clason, CAPS, a 2017 scholarship recipient.
Some esteemed past recipients include:
  • Michael Menn, CAPS, CGP, CGR, a long-time member of the NAHB Remodelers Board of Trustees and the 2016 Remodeler of the Year
  • Rolf Parelius, CAPS, CGP, CGR, the 2017 chair of the HBA of Greater New Orleans remodelers council and winner of the 2017 CADRE Award for Outstanding Council Chair
  • John Guillory, CAPS, CGA, a former member of the CAPS Board of Governors and working group to develop the new CAPS III course
The application period for the scholarship is open now through April 30. Learn more about eligibility requirements, and how to apply or submit a nomination online. Contact Gwyn Donohue for more information.

Watch as John Todd talks about his experiences as a scholarship recipient:

No, Not the Eagles, But Horty’s Own First-Place Bowling Champs!

No, not the Eagles, but Horty’s own first-place bowling champs!

The Home Builders Association of Delaware recently held their annual bowling tournament and for the 2nd year in a row the Horty Team brought home first-place trophies for the highest team score!

Mike Easton’s bowling ball wasn’t polished, so he had to sideline it this year. He was replaced by Justin Mast. Sure, Justin had plenty of folks doubting his skills, but he showed them what an underdog can do!

Brian Stratton retired from tournaments years ago and the skeptics were sure this ol’ guy would fail. Not one to disappoint, Brian proved that he can still hold his own on the alley!

Greg Barbish likes to keep his hands in tip-top shape by hammering and trashing on his computer keyboard … and it paid off! Those pins didn’t stand a chance!

Last but not least, there’s Wes Veigle. Some questioned whether his balance would be off because his beard was trimmed a little too close. No way! Wes’s game was on point!

During his victory speech, Brian had this to say: “This entire team, we’re just a bunch of driven men who accomplished something. We were a bunch of underdogs. And you know what an underdog is? It’s a hungry dog!” Dilly dilly, Brian, dilly dilly.
